Hi everyone. This blog post has been inspired by a video that has been going around social media “ things rich people do that the poor don’t” I absolutely loved that video hence why I am sharing this with my personal twist.
Disclaimers before you jump to it. 1. This post is intended to outline habits or behaviors that lead to poverty and not by any means make fun of and /or call you poor for simply doing one or more of these things. Obviously this is a general look at behaviors/ habits poor people tend to have on a general scale. 2. I do recognize that not all people create their situations, some if not most people are born into poverty. With that said I hope you enjoy this blog post and not get offended and/or defensive.
1. Focusing on Obstacles
Poor people tend to spend a lot of their time focusing on obstacles rather than opportunities. Whenever a small obstacle shows up in their lives, poor people will get fixated in that obstacle and almost always neglect to see what possible opportunities that issue could bring. Rich people on the other hand love obstacles and use them as lessons and even find innovative ways to make an opportunity out of it.
2. Watching TV
Poor people love to watch TV. According to the Nielsen report, US American adults watch five hours and four minutes of TV on average per day. That is 35.5 hours of TV a week and 77 days of TV per year. How ridiculous is this? TV has become the greatest escape for poor people right up there with social media. Meanwhile, while the poor people are busy indulging in mindless TV, rich people are busy either benefiting from the laziness of poor people and/or finding better ways to make their lives easier.
3. Relying on ONE stream of income
Poor people usually have only ONE stream of income. Rich people tend to have multiple streams of income. Even if they are employed elsewhere, they make sure to have three or more streams of income outside of their regular 9-5. With multiple streams of income, this creates some kind of financial security and of course more income.
4. Time Wasting Habits
Poor people love time wasting activities. Like I had mentioned in #2, poor people love to watch TV and indulge in social media. These two activities combines are the biggest time wasters of our times. If you are serious about changing your life, you need to cut down your time on social media and TV to 1-2 hours a day. Make sure you make this a rule and stick to it.
5. Bad Spending Habits
Poor people love impulse shopping. Poor people are the biggest consumers. Poor people buy to look rich which by itself is a paradox. While they spend their hard earned coins on the latest designer handbag or latest model of car, rich people are busy thinking of their next investment.
6. Poor Saving Habits
With all of these said, it’s come to no shock that poor people are also terrible at saving their money. As a matter of fact studies have shown that the average person when stricken with a $2000 emergency will not be able to afford it. Better yet, they will be spotted with a $2000 designer bag.
7. Lack of Discipline
It’s also not a shocker that poor people lack discipline. Some people might find this a bit cold, but it’s true. People who are poor lack self-discipline. It boils down to having your priorities together and setting yourself to achieve them.
8. Waking up Late
Poor people rarely ever wake up before sunrise or on time for a matter of fact. They sleep in late and wake up late. Rich people on the other hand wake up early and sleep early. If you look at famous rich people, they will always say they sleep early and start their day early. This is very important. Sleeping early ensures you are well rested and ready to tackle the day early on. Studies have also shown that mornings are great for concentration, creativity and overall productivity.
9. Not reading
Rich people love to read. Not just reading anything but reading thought provoking books that will help them grow and improve in one way or another. Since poor people are too busy watching TV, there is hardly anytime left in the day to read.
10. Making Excuses
Poor people tend to make excuses for what they do and don’t do. As for rich people excuses are just not an option. Rich people take full responsibility for their lives and make no excuses for their short coming.
One thing poor people do all the time is gamble. They spend their bit of money into lottery hoping that they will get the winning ticket and someday wake up rich. Rich people on the other hand take their money and find ways to improve on their business and/or start a new investment.
12. Not watching their health
Studies have shown that poor people tend to dismiss their health. These days eating healthy is quite cheap especially given the fact that poor people are the biggest mainstream consumers. Instead of ditching that $2000 dollar bag and opt for organic and whole foods, poor people would rather buy that designer bag and depend on instant noodles/ fast food and sodas for nutrition. Rich people on the other hand know that before all material things, their health and that of their family is their most treasured wealth. They understand that without their health, they cannot be in a stable mind, be productive and accomplish what they need to accomplish.
13. Birds of the same feathers flock together
We've had the saying "birds of the same feathers flock together". This saying is very true! When you look at poor people, they are always around other poor people and rich people are always in the company of other successful people. After all we are the average of the five people we are around. Look at the people who hangout with and see what direction your life is headed.
